Why We're Dancing – And Why It Matters - Supporting Specialist Hospital Palliative Care in the Mid North

This year, Wealthpoint North Battle of the Ballroom isn’t just a showstopper — it’s a lifeline.

At Hospice Mid-Northland, we believe everyone deserves access to compassionate, expert care — not just at home, but also when hospital admission becomes necessary. Yet right now, Bay of Islands Hospital does not have a funded Hospital Palliative Care Team (HPCT).

While hospitals in Whangárei and elsewhere have government-funded palliative care nursing and medical specialists, our Mid North whánau do not. That means patients experiencing complex, distressing symptoms at the end of life often miss out on timely, specialised support — or are transferred to Whangárei, away from their families and their home community.

We’re changing that!

Through this year’s Battle of the Ballroom, we aim to raise funds to:

  • Help fund a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Palliative Care
  • Bring equitable, expert end-of-life care into our local hospital
  • Keep patients closer to their whánau, whenua, and community
  • Ensure dignity, comfort, and compassionate support during one of life’s most vulnerable moments

Your Support Helps Us Dance for Something Bigger

This event is a community fundraiser that invites individuals from all walks of life to support Hospice Mid-Northland. Participants are involved in their personal capacity, and the event remains entirely apolitical in line with our charitable status.
